Questions
Is this really free?
Yes. The check and the letters are free during beta. Later we'll offer paid extras (AI bill scanning and case tracking); the basic check will stay free.
Do you store my information?
No. The check runs entirely in your browser. Your answers and letters are not sent to us or anyone else. Close the tab and they're gone.
Are you lawyers?
No. Billmira is a self-help tool that explains publicly available federal rules and gives you letter templates. We don't represent you or contact anyone on your behalf. For complex cases, a patient advocate or attorney can help.
What is hospital financial assistance?
Nonprofit hospitals must have a written financial assistance policy (sometimes called "charity care") and let you apply for at least 240 days after the first bill after discharge. Many policies give free or discounted care to households under 200%–400% of the federal poverty level. See the IRS rules.
What does the No Surprises Act cover?
If you have insurance, it generally protects you from out-of-network bills for emergency care, for many out-of-network providers at in-network hospitals and surgery centers, and for air ambulance. Details at CMS.gov or the No Surprises Help Desk, 1-800-985-3059.
