Who qualifies
Baylor Scott & White says its program covers people with no insurance who can't pay, and people with coverage who can't pay their share after insurance pays. It applies only to emergency and other medically necessary care. Other requirements on its page:
- You must be a U.S. citizen or resident.
- For non-emergency medically necessary care, you generally must live in Baylor Scott & White's service area, and the facility that treated you must be the closest one that can provide the care. Emergency care qualifies regardless of where you live.
- You complete an application and provide information about your finances.
The two levels of help
| Level | Yearly household income | What you owe |
|---|---|---|
| Financially indigent | At or below 200% of the federal poverty guidelines | 0% of the balance (100% discount) |
| Medically indigent | Above 200% and up to 500%, and your bills from all Baylor Scott & White providers, after third-party payments, are at least 5% of yearly household income | The lesser of your balance or 10% of gross charges, not more than the amounts generally billed to insured patients |
Income limits on Baylor Scott & White's page
Baylor Scott & White publishes these limits. They are marked as based on the federal poverty guidelines issued January 15, 2025, so ask a financial counselor which table is being applied to your account.
| Household size | 100% discount: income up to 200% | Reduced bill: income up to 500% |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | $31,300 | $78,250 |
| 2 | $42,300 | $105,750 |
| 3 | $53,300 | $133,250 |
| 4 | $64,300 | $160,750 |
| 5 | $75,300 | $188,250 |
| 6 | $86,300 | $215,750 |
The page also lists household sizes 7 to 10. Because the policy is written as percentages of the poverty guidelines, a newer table with higher limits may apply.
How the reduced bill works
Baylor Scott & White gives this example: a household of four earning $85,000 with gross charges of $50,000, an account balance of $10,000, and an amount generally billed of $15,000 would owe $5,000 (10% of gross charges). If your remaining balance is already below 10% of gross charges or the amount generally billed, you get no further reduction.
Doctors are often not covered
Baylor Scott & White says the program does not apply to services by physicians or other professionals unless they are listed on the provider list in its policy. Ask for that list if a bill came from a doctor's group.
If you don't meet the income limits
- People with unusual mitigating factors can still ask for review by Baylor Scott & White's Financial Assistance Committee.
- Baylor Scott & White offers an extended, interest-free payment plan to patients who don't meet the income limits and can't pay their bill.
