Step 1: get your reports

The FTC says you can get free copies from each of the three bureaus (Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion) at AnnualCreditReport.com, and the bureaus let you check your report once a week for free there. Read each report and circle any medical accounts that look wrong.

Step 2: dispute with each bureau that has the error

Your letter should include: your complete name and address, each error you want fixed and why, copies of supporting documents, and a copy of your report with the errors circled.

Step 3: dispute with the business that reported it

Write to the business that reported the error (for example a collection agency). Identify each inaccurate item, explain why, and include copies of supporting documents. If no dispute address is listed, ask the business for one.

What happens next

If the dispute isn't resolved, you can ask that a statement of your dispute be added to your file and included in future reports.

Check the bill itself, too

Many credit report errors start with a billing error. Get an itemized bill, check whether insurance should have paid, and read what medical debt can appear on credit reports in 2026. If a collector contacted you, see how to dispute a debt in 30 days.
