- Medical collections under $500 aren't included, paid or unpaid.
What happened to the CFPB rule
The CFPB finalized a rule in January 2025 to remove medical debt from most credit reports. A federal judge in the Eastern District of Texas vacated it on July 11, 2025, so it doesn't apply.
State laws
A growing number of states, including California, Colorado and New York, restrict medical debt on credit reports. How these laws interact with federal law is still being decided, so check your state's current rules.
What you can do
- Get your free reports at AnnualCreditReport.com and look for medical collections.
- Dispute any debt that's paid, under $500, or not yours with the bureau.
- If the debt came from a nonprofit hospital, ask whether you qualify for financial assistance. Approved assistance can reduce or erase the balance.
