*Billmira's calculation from the 2026 FPL for one person ($15,960). NYU Langone's policy publishes the same bands as weekly income for each family size; use that table for larger households.
Eligibility is based solely on household income and family size. Family size includes the patient, spouse, dependents, and a legal guardian the patient lives with, and a pregnant woman counts as two. Income is annual pre-tax income of the patient and a spouse who lives with them. For a minor, include income of the parents or legal guardians the patient lives with.
What the policy covers
- Medically necessary services at NYU Langone's hospital inpatient and Article 28 outpatient facilities: Tisch Hospital, NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island, NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk, and NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital.
- New York State residents: the program applies to medically necessary services.
- Non-residents: the program applies only to emergency services.
- Immigration status isn't considered, and a patient's assets (such as house or car) may not be considered.
- Physician bills are separate. NYU Langone's Faculty Group Practice has its own financial assistance program for people without insurance or who exhausted benefits.
The hospital policy excludes non-medically-necessary care, ambulance charges, private-duty nursing and private-room surcharges. It also excludes elective care when a commercial plan does not contract with the hospital and will not reimburse it, or lacks out-of-network benefits. Separately billed physician services are outside this hospital policy.
What you pay if approved
- Eligible patients aren't charged more than the amounts generally billed (AGB) to insured patients. The policy says the current AGB is 19% of charges.
- If an installment plan is approved, no interest is charged and the monthly amount won't exceed 5% of your gross monthly income.
- The policy defines underinsured patients as those whose out-of-pocket medical costs in the past 12 months exceed 10% of gross household income.
How to apply
- Use the New York State Uniform Financial Assistance Application. It's available at hospital registration points and on NYU Langone's billing and financial assistance page. You can apply at any time during the collection process.
- Gather proof of household size and income for every adult in the household: for example a recent tax return, pay stubs, W-2s, 1099s, an employer letter, unemployment or Social Security letters.
- Talk to a financial counselor for free and confidential help: 888-279-1364, Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Questions about a hospital bill: 800-237-6977.
- Apply for Medicaid or other public insurance if you may qualify. The policy says eligible patients must apply for Medicaid, Essential Plans, or other government programs before financial assistance eligibility, or financial assistance will be denied. Patients must also meet insurance billing requirements, such as resolving coordination-of-benefits issues.
You'll be notified of the decision within 30 days of submitting a completed application with all documents. For New York residents, approval covers the specific episode of care you applied for, so later services need a new application.
Protections while you wait
- If you've applied, you aren't required to pay until you're told the decision.
- The hospital can turn an account over to collections only with written notice at least 30 days before, and at least 180 days after the first post-service bill, and not while your financial assistance or Medicaid application is pending.
- The policy says the hospital will not sell your debt, file a lien against or foreclose on your primary residence, or garnish payroll wages, and it won't commence legal action without a reasonable effort to determine your FPL level, or against patients with incomes below 400% of FPL.
- It won't deny admission or treatment reasonably anticipated to be medically necessary because of an unpaid bill.
If you are denied
You can appeal in writing within 30 days of the denial notice, addressed to the Charity Care Committee, c/o Senior Director of Financial Counseling, NYU Langone Hospitals, 550 First Avenue, MSB 2-100A, New York, NY 10016. A successful appeal covers only the services that were appealed. For general steps see hospital financial assistance and how to get an itemized bill.
A note on conflicting numbers online
You may see 400% FPL mentioned in some NYU Langone documents and 600%/800% on third-party sites. The hospitals' Charity Care and Financial Assistance Policy, reissued in May 2026, says 100% discounts up to 600% FPL. If your bill depends on the exact tier, confirm with a financial counselor.
